Do Homemade Beauty Treatments really work? I wanted to find out. So for the last month or so Megan and I have been testing some popular homemade beauty treatments to see if they live up to the hype.
This Coconut Oil Hair Treatment is the first in my Homemade Beauty blog series. Megan (who helps me out here on the blog with DIY, Craft and Recipe posts) actually wrote this post a while back. She told me I really should try this Coconut Oil Hair Treatment….so I did…. I have included my thoughts at the bottom.
Coconut Oil Hair Treatment
Guest Post by Megan
On a recent trip to Costco, I bought a container of coconut oil for $15. I had heard from friends about the many uses for coconut oil… I have yet to do anything with mine until today…
This post is embarrassing for me because in order to demonstrate one of the uses of coconut oil, it requires a picture of me looking at my worst (huge shot to my pride!). Due to the torrential downpours inundating our area, I have been plagued with perpetual bad hair days. My hair and humidity equal this mess…
So here’s where the coconut oil comes in. Coconut oil is a great PRE-wash treatment for damaged, frizzy hair! Note I said PRE-wash…so if you try this, set aside some time.
All you do is take a small handful of coconut oil out of the container (if your hair is long, you may need more) and work into your hair. There is no need to melt the coconut oil because the heat from your hands will soften it. I found it was easier to apply with my hair flipped over in front of me. Concentrate on applying the oil in the most dry, damaged places. Once you have applied the oil, arrange your hair on your head in a twist and wait for 30 minutes. You can wear a shower cap or wrap plastic wrap around your hair to keep the moisture in, however I did neither of these. Hope you like the smell of coconut…mmmm!
Next, it’s time to wash and style. Shampoo and condition your hair as you usually do, however you will need to shampoo your hair at least 2-3 times to get the coconut oil out of your hair. Style your hair as usual AND ta-da!!! Much, much better!!!
I did find that my hair was softer and smoother, but I wanted to test it further. Exposure to general humidity outside did not alter my hair. It stayed smooth. However, when exposed to rain, there was mild frizz which later calmed down and disappeared with a simple hair brushing.
Verdict: coconut oil is a winner!!!
Guess what? You can also use it as a moisturizer for skin and you can cook with it.
As stated at the top of this post, I tried this Coconut Oil Hair Treatment as well…
…and I have to say I am impressed. There was a noticeably difference in the softness, shininess and manageability of my hair. My hair was also less frizzy!
For me the benefits of the treatment was VERY noticeable on the first day. I also noticed a difference in my hair the day after the treatment. After that I would say my hair was back to the pre-treatment state. I have since repeated this treatment a few times with good results.
In my opinion this Homemade Beauty Treatment lived up to the hype. Want to try it? You should be able to find Coconut oil at your local grocery or health food store. There is also a large variety of Coconut Oil over on Amazon (Looks like prices currently start at under $8)
I have several more homemade beauty ideas planned for the coming weeks. If you have a homemade beauty secret or idea that you would like to submit, please contact me.
